Invoking and Affirming One's Destiny the African Vodún Way

Invoking and Affirming One's Destiny the African Vodún Way

Avalú Sɛ Kpólí: A Perfect Place to Start and Continue in this Tradition

To know one's Kpólí/Ipin (destiny) in Vodún, one goes to the Fá agbasa yiyi - access, or sacred "living room" to experience Fázúnyí or initiation to Fá. With that you learn which Kpólí (Odù) that you were incarnated into this world under. It is your personal sacred sign that spells out what you came here to do, your taboos, and even information about certain aspects of your past and any past lives. To go into the Fá agbasa yiyi is the norm among the Ajã people who have not been abrahamicized.

Many who have not come to agbasa yiyi in the itankalẹ (Yọrùbá for "diaspora") do not know the deeper aspects of their destiny. However, whether one knows the details through Fá initiation or not we have developed a simple meditative method to call upon one's destiny.

The aspect of one's multilayered being that is said to contains one's destiny is called Sɛ kpólí in Afrikan Vodún. Within this phrase is the same word (Kpólí) used to refer to either of the 256 sacred chapters of the sacred Fá/Ifá corpus, except for the word is attached. This attachment makes it particular to one's own soul/destiny. As it relates strictly to the primordial spiritual connection, Sɛ Kpólí refers to that store of spiritual source within directly related to you.

Therefore, what follows are simple meditations in the Ajã language to call upon, affirm and kick start an activation process of one's destiny. By using the ancient Ajã language (or various other indigenous African languages), you are tapping into the most ancient and powerful aspects of your destiny. Hopefully, those who have not gone to agbasá yiyi will do so in order to receive complete insight into who they really are.

Though the affirmations can be done anywhere at anytime, it is always best to have a quiet space to do so. The following can be very helpful in establishing and/or strengthening one's connection to one's destiny; opening the way to many wondrous possibilities.

Finally, those familiar with the Ìṣẹ̀ṣè tradition of the Yọrùbá will note a similarity between invoking Sɛ Kpólí and Orí. One main difference is that the invocations pertaining to Sɛ Kpólí is directed specifically to one's destiny.
